PRE STRESSED CONCRETE

Prestressed concrete is a structural material that enables for specified engineering stresses to be imposed in members to counterbalance the stresses that develop when they are subjected to loading. It combines the high strength compressive qualities of concrete with the high tensile strength of steel. Stresses in regular reinforced concrete are borne by the steel reinforcement, whereas prestressed concrete sustains the load by induced stresses across the entire structural member. This makes it more shock and vibration resistant than ordinary concrete and allows it to build long, thin structures with significantly smaller sectional areas to carry equal loads.

I learned that,  it has advantages since Prestressing can reduce the amount of concrete required in construction, reducing material use and transportation while increasing durability and service life. Concrete is naturally resistant to compressive loads, but it has a significantly lesser resistance to tension. Reinforcement can be added to provide tensile capacity. This reinforcement can be tensioned during production or construction to apply a preparatory compression to those areas of the concrete element that will be subject to tension when installed and in service.
